Is Spray Foam Worth It in a Calgary Home? Where It Pays Off, and Where Blown Fibreglass Wins
Spray foam is the best-performing insulation per inch that you can buy for a house. That is true, and it is also the reason people overspend on it.
Because the question isn’t which product performs best per inch. It’s where inches are scarce. In the places where your house has unlimited room for insulation, paying a premium for performance per inch buys you very little. In the places where the cavity is fixed and small, that same premium is the only thing that gets you to a decent number.
Here’s how that plays out in a Calgary house, with the actual arithmetic.
Start with what Calgary has to hit
Calgary is not a generic Canadian climate. The City is specific about this: “Calgary has 5000 Heating Degree Days (HDD) placing it in climate zone 7A.” Since May 1, 2024, new construction here falls under the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition, whose Section 9.36 governs energy efficiency for houses and small buildings.
The effective insulation values published for zone 7A look like this. Note the two columns — a heat recovery ventilator in the house lowers what the envelope has to do on its own:

Two honest caveats. First, these are effective values for the whole assembly, not the label value of the insulation alone — framing, sheathing and air films all count. Second, requirements get updated, and the values above are published as a general reference rather than lifted from your permit. Confirm the current numbers with the City before you build to them. If you’re renovating rather than building new, they’re still the right target to aim at even where nobody is going to inspect you.
Now the arithmetic that decides everything
Using the design R-values per inch that Natural Resources Canada publishes, here’s how thick each material has to be to reach those targets on its own:

These are our own calculations from NRCan’s published per-inch values, covering the insulation layer only. They’re for understanding the trade-off, not for stamping on a drawing.
Look at the attic row. To reach R-59.2 you need 11.6 inches of closed-cell foam, or 20.4 inches of blown fibreglass. Foam saves you roughly nine inches of depth.
Now ask the obvious question: in an open attic, what is nine inches of depth worth to you?
Almost nothing. Nobody is living up there. Nobody is measuring headroom above the joists. Blown fibreglass costs a small fraction of foam per inch, and in an attic you can simply put down more of it. That’s why, for a straightforward attic floor, blown-in insulation genuinely saves you money and foam usually doesn’t earn its premium.
Now look at the wall and floor rows, and imagine the cavity is already framed and fixed at 5.5 inches. Suddenly nine inches of saved depth isn’t available to give away — and the calculus flips completely.
Where spray foam earns the premium
The pattern is consistent: foam wins wherever the space is fixed, awkward, or doing more than one job.
Bonus rooms and cantilevers over a garage. This is the single most common cold-room complaint in Calgary, and it’s a depth problem. The floor joists over an unheated garage are a fixed depth, the target is R-28.5, and cold air gets at that assembly from underneath and from the sides. You cannot solve it by adding more batt — there’s nowhere to put it.
Rim joists. The band of framing at the top of your basement wall is a short, interrupted, leak-prone strip that batt insulation fits badly. Foam fills it completely and seals it in one pass.
Cathedral and vaulted ceilings. Same story as the bonus room. Rafter depth is whatever the builder framed, and you often need air and vapour control in the same layer because there’s no room for a separate one.
Crawl spaces. Irregular surfaces, moisture exposure, and awkward access — everything batt handles badly and foam handles well.
Isolated problem areas. Sometimes a house has one wall, one corner, one bay that is measurably colder than everything around it. Targeted foam in that spot is often cheaper than re-doing an entire assembly. This is the use that our spray foam service gets called for most often — hard-to-reach or problem areas rather than whole-house application.
The combination most Calgary homes actually want
The choice isn’t really foam or fibreglass. In most houses the right answer uses both, each doing what it’s good at.
- Foam for control. A relatively thin layer of closed-cell foam handles air sealing and, at sufficient thickness, vapour control — in the specific locations where leakage and moisture are the problem.
- Blown fibreglass for bulk. Once the assembly is sealed, the cheapest path to a high R-value in an open attic is simply depth of loose fill.
Spend on foam where inches are scarce and air is leaking. Spend on depth where depth is free. That’s the whole strategy.
One caution that’s easy to miss: a well-insulated attic still needs to breathe. What actually changes the answer for your house
Before deciding, four things are worth knowing about your specific situation:
- Do you have an HRV? Look at the table again — an HRV drops the attic target from R-59.2 to R-49.2. That’s ten R-points of insulation you don’t have to buy.
- How deep is the cavity, and can it change? If you can add depth for free, add depth. If you can’t, you’re buying performance per inch whether you like it or not.
- Is the existing insulation sound? Old, compressed, contaminated or rodent-damaged material has to come out before anything goes in. That’s a separate line on the estimate.
- Where is the air actually leaking? Insulation slows heat transfer; it doesn’t stop moving air unless it’s sealing as well. A cold room is often an air problem wearing an insulation costume.
That last one is why an inspection beats a phone quote. The answer for a 1970s bungalow in Acadia is not the answer for a two-storey in Evanston with a bonus room over the garage, even if both owners describe the same symptom.
The honest summary
Spray foam is worth it in cantilevers and bonus rooms, rim joists, crawl spaces, cathedral ceilings, and isolated problem areas — anywhere the cavity depth is fixed or the assembly needs air and moisture control in one layer.
Spray foam is usually not worth it as the primary insulation across an open attic floor, where blown fibreglass reaches the same target for far less by simply going deeper.

Is spray foam insulation worth the extra cost in Calgary? It depends entirely on the location. In a fixed-depth assembly — a bonus room floor over a garage, a rim joist, a cathedral ceiling — foam is often the only product that reaches target. Across an open attic floor, blown fibreglass usually reaches the same number for far less money.
What climate zone is Calgary in for insulation requirements? Zone 7A. The City of Calgary states that Calgary has 5000 heating degree days, placing it in climate zone 7A, and that the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition has applied here since May 1, 2024.
How many inches of insulation does a Calgary attic need? To reach an effective R-59.2 with the insulation layer alone, roughly 20 inches of blown fibreglass, about 16.5 inches of open-cell foam, or about 11.6 inches of closed-cell foam. With an HRV in the house the target drops to R-49.2 and every one of those numbers comes down.
Does an HRV change how much insulation I need? Yes. The published zone 7A values drop from RSI 10.43 (R-59.2) to RSI 8.67 (R-49.2) for ceilings below attics when an HRV is present, and exterior and foundation wall targets drop as well.
Why is my bonus room over the garage always cold? Because it’s a fixed-depth floor assembly over an unheated space, with a target of about R-28.5, exposed to cold air from below and often from the sides too. You usually can’t fix it by adding more batt — there’s no room. It’s the textbook case for foam.
Should I use spray foam in my whole house? Most Calgary homes don’t need that. A smarter split is foam where air sealing and depth constraints are the problem, and blown fibreglass for bulk R-value in the attic where depth is cheap.
Do I need to remove my old insulation first? Sometimes. If the existing material is compressed, contaminated, water-damaged or has rodent activity, it comes out first. If it’s sound and simply thin, topping up is often the better value.
